3 Times When Firing Clients Is Right

Reasonable Reasons For Firing Clients

When you’re making your way in the business world initially it may be your objective to make every customer happy. Let’s strip it down to the truth, now. You are NEVER going to make every customer happy, because as you will discover, some people are just impossible to please. This is something our marketing for small business team has learned with time. With the risk of seeming abrasive by saying this we’ll just go out on a limb and say it anyway; the customer isn’t always right. Now, we’re not saying to go around waving your “magic firing stick wand” every time a customer makes you mad, but there are times when it may be right to fire your clients.

Here are some times when it would be appropriate to cut ties with those that you’ve tried hard to work with:

1.) Their Values Don’t Match Yours: For example, we believe in giving more in value than we take in payment, but not everyone thinks or feels this same way. That’s perfectly fine, but if we don’t face the same direction as our clients we let them know right away that we aren’t a good fit for them.

2.) They’re Unreasonably Demanding: If you set out a written agreement and everything is signed and stamped then the plan should go forth as set (unless both parties agree to the same changes). If the client begins demanding business ideas, changes not previously discussed, and attempting to contact you at all hours of the evening then this is a suitable reason to drop the client.

3.) They’re Never On Time: If your client is terrible at keeping up your appointments without any reasonable explanations this is a red flag! This also goes for never being on time with payments, one-on-one meetings, and conference calls.

Nitpicking clients are one thing, but clients who are rude and unwilling to play by the rules is another ball game. If you’re suffering with a bad client relationship don’t be afraid to let them know that after consulting with them you’ve come to realize that you can’t be of any further help to them.
